What Does This Vaginal Ultrasound Report Indicate?

Hi my mother just had a vaginal ultrasound, this was her result. Uterus WNL for shape and size. Endometrium thickened at 5.7cm, possible blood clot vs hyperplasia. Small cyst on right ovary. Recommended clinical and repeat sono as clinically indicated. What does this mean?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

This report indicates that the lining within the uterus (endometrium) is thicker than expected.
*how old is your mother?
*does she still get her period? If not, when did it stop?
*how many children does she have?
*any previous surgery?
*does she have any other medical issues or take any medications?
*does she have any bleeding or abdominal pain?
*why was this scan done?
*has she had any weight loss or fatigue?

The reports suggests either a blood clot or an increased growth (abnormal) of the endometrium.
I recommend :
-an OBGYN consult
-pap smear
-blood tests (complete blood count)
-repeat ultrasound after 3 months or sooner if there is any unusual vaginal bleeding.
- a D&C (dilatation and curettage), if indicated after each months or sooner if there is bleeding

The report suggests a repeat scan and a consult with her OBGYN.
Please make sure you discuss all options with her doctor. The trend is to advise surgery as a prevention of cancer but that is not necessary unless there is evidence that it could be cancer or develop into one.
Get a second or even a third opinion, if required.
Sometimes during menopause and a for a few years after, endometrium can be thick. Examining this and keeping a close eye on it by regular follow up is important.

Based on this report alone, a diagnosis cannot be made.
So don't worry, just consult an OBGYN.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
