Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 8 weeks pregnant and recently had an ultrasound performed and it revealed a fetal pole, some blood in the gestational sac, and no heartbeat. My doctor stated that this could be a miscarriage taking place or I'm not as far along in the pregnancy as we thought. Currently, I have been spotting and at times bleeding a small amount of brown and dark red blood. What do you think?
Hello, thanks for writing in. Usually the cardiac activity is visible in the 7th week but this can be earlier or later. Absent cardiac activity at eight weeks, along with spotting/bleeding is highly suggestive of a missed abortion or miscarriage. But there is a possibility that your dates may not be reliable. Also if the sac size and fetal size are matching with your menstrual dates, it is better to wait and see.
In such cases a followup ultrasound in 1 week is always beneficial to remove any doubts and confirm the diagnosis. Kindly discuss this with your doctor as well. Hope this is helpful. Do write in if you have any doubts. All the best.
