General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello.
Thank you for contacting HCM.

I have seen many patients with more or less similar ultrasound findings in many pregnant ladies. The most likely possibility is that this is a normal variant of normal kidney tissue. It is known as Extra-Renal Pelvis, in which some part of the renal pelvis is outside of renal tissue.
However, there is possibility of obstructive cause which is known as PUJ( Pelvi-ureteric junction) obstruction. It is difficult to differentiate between these two conditions in early pregnancy. Follow up ultrasound in third trimester and after delivery ( ultrasound of the baby) needs to be done.
If PUJ Obstruction is confirmed at follow up ultrasounds....then I would suggest you to consult a neonatologist....even in that case the condition is treatable.

I hope this answers your query. Please feel free to contact HCM again if you have any concerns.
Wishing you and your baby good health.
