What Does This Transvaginal Ultrasound Report Mean?

Hello. I had a transvaginal ultrasound performed yesterday and I received the results, but will not see my doctor until next week to discuss the results. Could you help explain what this means and what typical procedures would be? Results: Uterus measures 9.0 X 6.3 X 5.4 cm. The endometrial echo complex measures 5mm. There is a small amount of free fluid. The right ovary measures 2.8 X 2.3 X 2.4 cm. The left ovary measures 4.6 X 3.2 X 2.8 cm. There is an anechoic lesion with posterior acoustic enhancement arising from the right ovary measuring 1.6 X 1.3 cm. A hypoechoic lesion in the left ovary measures 3.0 X 2.0 cm. Impression: Right ovarian cyst Involuting versus hemorrhagic cyst left ovary

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the transvaginal ultrasound report is indicative of normal uterus size and thickness. The right ovarian cyst which is involuting suggest normal physiologic changes. The hemorrhagic cyst of left ovary is of bothersome issue, which may require a laparoscopic drainage procedure or oophorectomy depending upon the fertility status, consultant evaluation and patient desire.

The free fluid in pouch of douglas indicates reactionary fluid secondary to pelvic inflammation, which can be easily cured with systemic antibiotics as cephalosporin or others.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
