What Does This Transvaginal Ultrasound Report Indicate?
I am a 41 year old female with family history of ovarian and breast cancer. I had a transvaginal ultrasound done and have a question on the results. The part that I have a question on reads as follows The left ovarie is 2.3 x 3.4 x 2.2 cm, with an exophytic, paraovarian 3.1 x 2.5 cm simple cyst (previously 2.1 x 1.9 cm.) What does this mean? Is an exophytic the same as a paraovarian cyst? Should I be concerned and what should be the follow up care if any?
Hello and welcome to HCM, The interpretation of trans-vaginal ultrasound is as follows: The size of left ovary is within normal range. There is a presence of a cyst measuring little above 3 cm in maximum diameter on the outer surface of the ovary. Exophytic is the term used for outward growth of the cyst. There is an increase in size of cyst so it needs to be monitored. Simple cyst is non-neoplastic and harmless but if it grows to considerable size, it can cause abdominal distention, pain due to secondary changes etc. Regular monitoring is required at the moment and there is nothing to worry.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
