What Does This Blood Pressure Measurement Indicate?

When donating blood I had my blood pressure taken. It was 90/80. I am 56 years old, 5 6 , 120 lbs. I try to eat well and exercise daily. I do have a stressful job (like everyone else). I ve never had such a low top number and my bottom number is usually in the 70s. I just want to know your thoughts on these numbers at my age. Thank you.

Hi,

Your systolic BP (top digit) is on the lower side, and diastolic (bottom digit) on the higher side, leading to a low pulse pressure (difference between the two digits).

This usually we come across in conditions like shock, cardiac failure or abnormalities of heart valves, but uncommonly can occur in dehydration also. Anyhow, a single reading need not be taken as significant. This can be a reading / measurement error also. Just repeat the reading manually and see your doctor only if it is persisting. If you don't have symptoms like exercise intolerance, dizziness, fatigue, it is very unlikely that you have above mentioned conditions.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
