What Does This X-ray Finding Indicate?

I just had my ankle xrayed because I was having unresolved swelling by evening time. No trauma, no falls, just discomfort and swelling. They wanted to take the xrays again because they said they detected a certain lucency near the distal fibula. What does this mean?

A lucency is an area of bone loss. This could be due to inflammation, infection, or even cancer. Repeat xrays may help further define and confirm the abnormality. The fact that you are having the persistent swelling with an abnormality noted in the xray indicates some kind of active process going on in the bone. The next step would then be further studies to determine exactly what the lesion is. Most like this will be a biopsy. That will enable the diagnosis to be pinned down quickly and appropriate therapy started. Hope this answers your question.
