Hi I am a 40 year old female who just had an MRI w/o contrast for chronic headaches over the past five months. Findings showed a few small foci of increased signal are present within the frontal white matter bilaterally on the T2 and FLAIR sequences. The findings is nonspecific but could be related to chronic microvascular ischemic change. What does this mean? Please Help??
There might be small scattered areas of T 2 and FLAIR hyperintensity in the brain as found on MRI scan. This appearance might be due to many causes. It can be due to decreased blood flow through the small channels in the brain.
The microvasscular ischemic changes are also seen in the elderly and more in those who have diabetes or hypertension. This is due to the decrease in flow of blood through the small channels of brain. This is not a serious condition but if occurring before 60 years, it needs further evaluation to find out any other cause. Clinical examination is most important.
