What Does Swelling In The Chest On The Left Side Indicate?

My 10 year old son was born with transposition of the great arteries and had corrective surgery at 3 months old. He has had no significant problems other than valves leaking moderately since but sees his cardiologist every year. We are watching for signs of 3 leaking valves to worsen. I noticed last night that his left chest area is significantly larger than the right side, to the point his ribs are showing through at the center of his chest on left but not right. It has not been this way in the past. Is this cause to take him back to the cardiologist earlier than his next appt in 4 months?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

* As per my surgical experience, the presence of swelling in chest with ribs showing through center does not sound to be normal in a child who has been operated for transposition of great vessels in past.
* I recommend to consult his pediatric surgeon and consult at earliest without waiting for next 4 months.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
