What Does Stinging Sensation In The Chest Indicate?

Everytime I see this one guy unexpectedly I feel a sting in my heart, I am not in love with him or anything but I know that he likes me. I seldom think about him so I wouldn t call him my crush either. That is only when I see him unexpectedly tho, when I know he will be there I don t feel it. It s not like my heart skips a beat or starts beating really fast, it s just like a sting in my heart. Also, whenever I see a tall person with a bun (he has a bun) I always think it s him but I don t even like him. Is something wrong with me?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your problem sounds like it could be psychogenic or stress related. So I suggest you counsel with a psychiatrist regarding this to handle any feelings of anxiety or stress.

However, if you feel this pain is very severe and this is in accordance with the opinion of your psychiatrist and general physician, then you should consult a cardiologist and get an ECG (electrocardiography) as well as possibly an echocardiogram to evaluate your heart.

There is also a condition called as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy which causes weakening of the heart muscle on exposure to emotional stress also called as the Broken Heart syndrome. Your cardiologist will inform you of this.

Until your evaluation, I recommend using breathing exercises and relaxation techniques such as meditation to deal with any stress you may have.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ankit Gopinath
