What does severe pain in the upper abdomen and sternum indicate?

Hello. This week I have had 2 episodes of crying 10/10 pain in my upper abdomen, lower sternum. I am 17days postpartum from a long labor resulting in a c-section followed by a uterus infection then a topical skin infection. i have been on antibiotics since. It seems to calm down after eating many Tums but still lingers. Is this just heartburn or could it be something else?

Hello,

You are having gastritis or acid peptic disease. You need to follow some lifestyle tips such as:

1. Do not eat spicy food.
2. Take medications for gastritis- Pantop/Omez/Rantac.
3. Take little food at frequent intervals. Breakfast around 8 a.m., small snack at 11 a.m., lunch at 1 p.m., small snack at 4 p.m., and dinner at 8 p.m.
4. Drink plenty of water.
5. Do not smoke, take alcohol or tobacco and even excess of coffee and tea.
6. Do not take much of stress. Stress aggravates gastritis.
7. Do regular exercise. Atleast half an hour per day.
8. Learn meditation techniques.
9. Follow this regularly for 21 days. It is said that anything you practice regularly for 21 days, it becomes a habit.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sanjay Kini
