What Does Severe Pain In The Neck Indicate?

my wife woke up with a severe neck ache to the point that she cannot move her neck an inch to the right or left. she took vicadin last night along with ibuprophen with no luck from either one. she also is sensative to the touch behind her right ear....what can this be?? should she go to emergency today??

Thanks for query.
In absence of fever or vomiting. .. such neck pain after waking up in mirning.. could be due to sprainin neck muscles following awakard head position while sleeping.
Muscle relaxent ointments over the counter (like relaxil)should be tried along with pain pills for a couple of days.Any ear infection needs to be excluded... do not put a match stick,pins to clean ear. Do not put oil to soothe it.
Consult family physician in case of ear problem,no reliefwith home care,appearance of untoward signs like voomiting-fever -excessive neck tenderness .
