What Does Prolonged Menstrual Bleeding Indicate?

In the last 14 weeks I have had 5 menstrual cycles. One cycle bleeding lasted for 16 days another 9 days. 2 were normal in timing and duration. The 5th just began, 16 days after the start of my prior cycle. Is there an urgent need to see a physician or is it reasonable to go within the next few weeks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

According to history you are having irregular menstruation. For that work up should be done and cause should be identified like fibroid, endometriosis, thyroid problem, diabetes, ovarian cause, etc. If needed serum random blood sugar estimation, serum TSH estimation, pelvis examination, urine routine microscopic examination, USG pelvis, etc. can be done. According to cause specific treatment should be given. Take care and consult gynecologist for examination.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Parth Goswami
