What Does Pain On The Right Side Of The Abdomen Indicate?

A day or two ago I began to have a dull steady pain on the right side. It hurts especially when I press on a certain area at the top right of my stomach. It doesn t go away regardless of whether or not I eat, go to the bathroom, stand, sit, et al. It is not totally incapacitating, but it does interfere with my ability to become comfortable. The muscles across my abs are very weak and my stomach is thick and droopy. But this problem is new and I have been this way for 73 years. The pain is localized. -- YYYY@YYYY

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms are nonspecific but suggestive of benign digestion disorder called IBS or irritable bowel syndrome. This is manifested with bloating or diarrheas with pain and abdominal discomfort.

As remedies you should look at your diet. If it contains a large amount of carbohydrates that are difficult to digest, try to replace them. Carbohydrates that are easier to digest include potatoes, rice, and bananas. Also, try to eat around 5 to 6 small meals a day instead of 3 larger ones to help your digestive process.

Chew properly to avoid doing anything that may increase the amount of air that you swallow. This includes making sure that you are chewing your food properly, and avoiding chewing gum or smoking. Also, drink some peppermint tea, chamomile tea and ginger. In severe cases, colonoscopy should be done and some medicines recommended.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
