What Does Pain In The Upper Abdomen Indicate?

I have had a cramping pain in my upper stomach since five last night with vomiting twice due to the pain. The pain is not as severe now but still there. I don’t think I have a stomach bug I am thinking gallbladder. Not sure if I need to go to urgent care today or wait out the weekend.

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. since the symptoms are acute [5 days] thus following should be the symptomwise approach:

i. As the pain is in the upper abdomen, thus the most common causes are biliary colic [gall stones], hepatitis, cholecystitis, seek immediate medical assistance [general surgeon opinion] and ask for ultrasonography of HBR [hepatobiliary region] for Amoebic liver abscess and Cholecystitis.

PS. other possibilities which can be excluded at the time of examination are an inflammatory bowel disorder.

ii. Although most of the times, pain may be the result of minor injury or postural changes, however sometimes there may be an underlying medical condition/situation which needs appropriate treatment.
