General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your short history of pain in low back that goes to the legs, no accident or injury, particularly when picking something, wants directions.
The commonest cause of such pain is a condition called sciatica although other causes can be nerve pinching due to muscle spasms, fibrosis or so.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Clinical evaluation by a Neurosurgeon or an Orthopedic Surgeon.
MRI of lower spine to see for any slipped discs causing compression on the spinal cord.
If such a disc is present then you may need a surgery for correction after discussing with a Neurosurgeon about possible outcome and complications.
Also take an opinion of a Physiotherapist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
