What Does Pain In The Abdomen And Pelvic Area Indicate?

Hello...my name is Jill. I have been in pain for a couple of weeks in my abdominal and pelvic area and visited my doctor, very reluctantly, on Thursday. I do not go to the doctors unless under dire circumstances. I do not like taking any medication. I am 64 but consider myself healthy. On my visit, my doctor set up a CT scan for that day, fortunately and the results the following day showed an acute case of colitis in the sigmoid? colon, bowel and rectum. I was told that I had to take an antibiotic which scared me to death!!!...as the last one I took was 16 years ago, apart from 3 lots of rocefyn? injections over a period of 10 years. I was prescribed Flagyl.......500mg x 3 a day for a week. I am completing my second day and feel dreadful to say the least. I know that I have to finish the medication in order to get better but wonder how. I wondered how long it takes for the medication to level out in the system, or does it just get stronger each day? My heart is beating faster than usual and I have much discomfort on the right side , going into the groin which began yesterday after my third tablet. I want to complete this course but would appreciate your imput. I feel very weak in myself and have little appetite. I would like to remain positive but do not feel at all well. I have one more tablet to take today that I have looked at for an hour!!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, Welcome to Ask a doctor services.
I have read your query & can understand your concern.

Since you have been diagnosed with Colitis get it treated, else it may result in more discomfort & complications(Diarrhea, bloating, blood with stool, etc) later in life. Continue with the medications prescribed. No, you need not feel scared, you are feeling week because of reduced blood supply to the colon leading to Ischemia. Medications you are taking will control it but keep yourself well hydrated to maintain the electrolyte balance of the body. Take antacids, Omeprazole to get relieve from bloating, avoid constipation, include fiber in your diet. Get investigations(CBC, Stool& urine analysis, colonoscopy/ barium enema if required) done.

Take care.

Dr Nupur K
