What Does High White Blood Cell Count Indicate?

My husband has been experiencing health issues and has had many blood tests and scans to try to find out what is causing his symptoms, but all that showed up is his white blood cell count was slightly elevated. All the scans have come back negative. Now his doctor is going to refer him to a hemotologist to see if there is something he missed in the tests, but is still waiting for him to call back.....All this waiting for all the tests results has certainly taken its toll on us and now more waiting.....His condition has been going on for 3 months now and he seems to be getting worse. He has lost over 50 lbs. without trying to,he eats his meals, but not as much as he use to. He doesn t want any of his favorite foods now. He has trouble sleeping, and when he does get to sleep he doesn t sleep soundly and if he wakes up in the middle of the night he has a very hard time going back to sleep. He also has to urinate more frequently. Also he experiences night sweats, not every night but when he does have them it wakes him up because he is soaked in sweat. And lately he has been saying he feels very warm in the mornings,I feel his forehead,he doesn t feel warm to me,but feels sweaty, clammy. And his mind is not working like it use to,he has trouble working in his job. He is a caretaker for a summer children s camp in which he has worked for the past 29 years and knows how to repair everything in camp. Now he feels lost when he goes to repair something that he would normally know how to do as soon as he would look at it. Now he has to look on the internet how to fix it. He told me that 1 day he just felt totally lost and he didn t know why,and he has been forgetting to do some things that he has been doing for 29 years every year in preparation to get camp ready to open. If you could give me some information on what possibly could be causing these symptoms I would greatly appreciate it.. It seems that these local doctors here are not trying to figure it out....I know he needs to see different doctors, but he has to wait to get the referrals because of insurance reasons, and all this time waiting and he isn t getting any better because obviously he needs some treatment to make him better......he did get his medical records from his doctor.....Thank You so much for your time and I look forward to your answer or suggestions as to what we should do.

Hello,

I am concerned with your husband's health issues. Your doctor has decided the right thing to refer him to hematologist. I need to know the exact values of his blood report and peripheral blood film to establish my opinion regarding his illness. I suggest you to visit your hematologist and seek his advice as soon as possible and get other tests done if advised like bone marrow biopsy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sameen Bin Naeem, General & Family Physician
