What Does Excessive Phlegm In The Throat Indicate?

Every morning I wake up with what I feel is mucus in my throat. I either have to cough it out, or blow my nose. My snot comes out yellow green and it smells, sometimes very thick. Sometimes when I inhale I feel a burn that runs all the way to the back of my head. I ve had this problem about 2 years now. Other days my forehead aches where my eyebrows start. And throughout my day, my right nostril feels obstructed, but my left is fine. What could this be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
i can understand your concern.
Yellowish phlegm usually indicates a bacterial infection. i would suggest a culture and sensitivity of the sputum to check for presence of infection. frequent allergies can also be a reason for blocked nose and excessive phlegm. since only your right nostril feels obstructed, a polyp or a small bone growth might be present. kindly get a Xray PNS done. this will help us in identifying the cause. meanwhile you can use over the counter xylometazoline spray for nasal obstruction. do not use it for more than 5 days at a stretch as this can lead to rebound obstruction
