What Does Dehydration While On Thyroid Medication Indicate?

After my throidectomy, my doctor raised my thyroid mess from 25 to 100mg I take them in the mornin, with a bottle of water, on an empty stomach. Not so I pee! I don t mind as much because I had no idea that I was so dehydrated till they put the if in my arm before my surgery. But is that normal?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I would like to say that firstly, the levels of some hormones and some electrolytes must be checked. You should have also told us at which dose you are taking the medicine. Although, in my opinion, thyroid medicines should not cause dehydration. So, the other parameters must be checked. You should also tell me whether any medications are going on.

I would like to give some tests:
1. Complete Blood Test including levels for sodium, potassium, calcium, calcitonin.
2. Thyroid Hormone level (T3, T4, TSH)
3. Liver Function Tests
4. Kidney Function Test
5. ADH Level
6. Whole Abdomen USG
7. Fasting Blood Sugar

I would also ask you to follow these:
1. Drink Water. Do not keep yourself dehydrated.
2. Drink good diet also.
3. Sometimes, drink water with salt and sugar. At least 2 times in a day.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
