Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all it's sad to know what your husband had been going through lately. Based on the history you have shared, the catheter induced urinary tract infections are common entities and may need antibiotics coverage from time to time. The dark coloration can be due to blood or infective cells collection. For long standing catheterization, silicon based catheters are preferred. Surgical procedures like TURBT to relieve obstruction and natural voiding resumption can be one option and should be discussed with a urologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
