What Does An Itchy Rash On The Back Indicate?

My husband has had a severe itchy rash on his back for over 30 days. He has been to the dermatologist and was given a cream for relief. This is not working. He has also had a reoccurring sore in the roof of his mouth and now also has a tooth ache. The rash is now spreading to different parts of his trunk. He takes medication for plaque in his heart. Any ideas, we are at our wits end.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is possible that the rash is pityriasis rosea which is an itchy rash that tends to occur on the back. It can last 6 to 8 weeks in some persons. Calamine lotion or topical steroids may help with the itching. Oral antihistamines such as Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec or Allegra may help as well. The exposure the sunlight seems to help some persons as well. Avoid harsh soaps, fragrances, hot water, wool.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
