What Does An Indentation On The Lower Back Indicate?

I have a sudden indentation in my lower back, about 3 inches to the right of my spine, around l5-s1 I would say. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis and was just at physical therapy. I hadn’t exercised or used these muscles in quite some time. My whole lower back is extremely sore. Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Noted the history and understood your concerns.
My thoughts and suggestions are as below.
Since you have ankylosing spondilitis the most probable cause of a lump in the back on side of spine can be related to the Synovial thickening of the inter-vertebral joints. Other reasons can be Lipoma, sebaceous cyst or so.

I would advise you the following:

Consult a General Surgeon for examination and necessary investigations to know the exact cause of such a swelling. If this is lipoma or so get operated. If not then get referred back to the Orthopedic Surgeon.May Need an MRI of the area to know the exact diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
