What Does An Altered Sense Of Smell And Taste Indicate?

FOr the past week I have been experiencing a strange smell and taste. It is constant. At first I thought it must be a cosmetic or other product that I am using. I am now quite sure it is nothing I am putting in or on my body. Everything, taste similar to the smell. Mouthwash, coffee, apples, everything. It is not really a foul smell but it is quite bothersome...it has a sweet smell but not like candy. Difficult to explain. I have not been sick and do not have sinus issues or allergies. I do have MS but have not had any medication changes in the past year. I am not sure if I should see my pup, an ENT, or my neurologist. Any ideas?

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of altered sense of smell and taste which could be due to oral infection, nerve dysfunction like glossopharyngeal and could be due to side effects of certain medications.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to maintain proper oral hygiene and use oral corticosteroids as well because if it's due to any allergy it will resume back taste.

- Take diet rich in zinc supplements as that will recover taste.

You should visit neurologist once as well and take medications which lower down autoimmune or nervous system disorder if it is due to nerve dysfunction. Drink plenty of water and fluids.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
