What Does A Purple Line Across The Lower Back Indicate?

My teenage age son has a long, thin mark across his lower back. It skips over the spine and continues on the other side. He has no pain with it. There was no accident causing it. However, it has been there for about a year and it has gone from red in color to purple now. It is about 4 inches long on each side. He has a slim build and is healthy otherwise.

Hi there,

This sounds like stretch marks. This can be due to rapid weight gain or rapid stretch marks. I'll see this occasionally in patients who have excess of steroid hormones such as in cushion's disease or who take a high amount of steroids.
You can get a cortisol level checked, which can help evaluate him for cushing's disease.

I hope I have answered your question. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
