What Does A Painful Lump On My Back Indicate?

Sir, I am 42 years old. I never know I had tumor on my back, tumor position is not on exactly back bone or spine. When my brother gave me a massage, he found that I had tumor on back. I went a MD medicine doctor, the doctor told that it is neuro-fiborma and not harmful. He told that the surgery can be done but it may again develop. Sometimes only I have little pain in that area but tolerable. Let me know your suggestion. I am living out of India since 12 years. I had night duties last year and I had not good life style. Did it generated due to bad life style or genetic problem?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Neurofibromas are a genetic disorder causing lesions in the skin, nervous system and skeleton. They rarely undergo malignant transformation. However, they may catch on clothing and/or cause cosmetic embarrassment, stinging or itching.

Subcutaneous neurofibromas may be tender to touch and cause tingling in the distribution of the affected nerve. Malignant change occasionally occurs: if rapid growth occurs, refer to a specialist, as removal may result in nerve damage.

It is not due to your lifestyle and you shouldn't worry too much about it, except if there is a sudden growth.
