we have a 15 year old girl with small golfball size swelling on her right side of her neck. she is complaining of sore throat and is acting like she has stiff neck, what can we do to comfort her. we just arrived to florida driving from south carolina. i gave her an ice pack to put on bump

First of all give a detailed history about Duration of swelling,painful or not, Consistency and presence of fluid or pus.
swelling in neck may be due to multiple reasons including simple sore throat, Tuberculosis, even malignancy
give her simple painkillers for comfort
and visit a physician for check up, because she may need FNAC or other investigations depending upon examination findings
