What Does A Low Lying Placenta During Pregnancy Indicate?
Hi.I m pregnant for 13 weeks and 2 days.in my last scan done by 19 Feb.I was told low lying placenta.it is my first pregnancy after 8 month of my marriage. But my Dr did not explain that how much placenta is low lying.I had two time minor spotting on my due date of period. But now concern is I m worried about it.plz tell me any precautions to manage it.
The spotting around the due date of your periods is very common, almost 1 in 5 pregnant women do and it is not related to low placenta because the placenta is not formed as yet at that time.
The placenta is formed around 5 weeks later (at 9 weeks of pregnancy) and takes full function around 12 weeks of pregnancy so there is nothing to worry about that spotting episode.
As for the low-lying placenta, the doctor will need to follow you on ultrasound.
Sometimes with time and the growth of the uterus it moves up. The placental edge should not be closer then 2.5 cm to the cervix of the uterus otherwise it risks to cause bleeding.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
