What Does A Large Canker Sore On Tongue Indicate?

I had a large canker sore on the centre of my tongue and as it has been getting better, one has seemed to form behind my back molar , it is not a wisdom tooth because I have already had them removed but it s very uncomfortable. What would it be? Just a canker sore ? Or could it be something more serious like oral hurpes?

Hello,
Oral viral sores are common in the mouth. These will resolve in a short period of time, one – two weeks. You can rinse with warm salt water. Avoid spicy and acidic foods that may irritate the ulceration. You can find some soothing gel that contain benzocaine for some relief. Some anti-inflammatory medications such as Motrin or Tylenol may offer relief if there is accompanying inflammation. These ulcerated areas need to heal on their own.
Viruses often reoccur or respond to stress. There are anti-viral medications that can reduce the severity if caught in the earlier stages such as Acryvil. Docosanol 10% or Abreva may offer relief.
You should be concerned if a sore in the mouth does not heal. See your dentist for further evaluation. There are dental conditions such as a broken or sharptooth that could cause chronic irritation and prevent an area like this from healing. A clinical exam and any other diagnostic test necessary will be determined. Monitor the ulcerated area and report this condition to your dentist. Make sure you keep up on your routine dental exams which include oral cancer screenings.
Thank you for your inquiry.
