What Does A Dark Spot On The Epiglottis Indicate?

Hi, Roger here. I had a lot of phlegm in the throat today, suddenly. I spat and later coughed and vomited twice but could not get rid of the irritation in the throat for 40minutes. 4 hours later I notice a dark spot on the epiglottis about 2mm across. I have been in a very humid environment for the last 10days with very little dust and have not inhaled any insects (a problem I have during outdoor sport every few years which causes similar choking spitting symptoms). Slight discomfort at the back of the mouth at present as if something small is stuck in the rear nasal area. I am blaming an unidentified physical particle for the whole problem but will appreciate any advice.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi, The dark spot on the epiglottis most probably will be a small area of hemorrhage below the mucosal lining but it lies at epiglottis is doubtful as epiglottis is not usually visible in self examination of throat. But this hemorrhagic area can be there frequently post forceful vomiting due to any reason. Inadvertent ingestion of any particle or insect can be a reason but reflux is a more common reason and so does allergy due to exposure to some allergen. Please take a proton pump inhibitor along with prokinetic. Avoid spicy, very hot and junk food. Gentle gargling with hexidine will also help reducing symptoms. In case the dark area persists, do consult an ENT and a laryngeal examination will be required. Regards
