What Does MRI Report Indicate?

I am a 33 year old female who was recently in the hospital for urinary retention, and severe back pain. I did not have insurance so they released me and told me that EVERYONE has MRI results like this! What is your opinion.

Pre- and postcontrast enhanced MRI lumbar spine dated 6/5/2012: TECHNIQUE:
1. T1, T2, and STIR sagittal images of the lumbar spine.
2. T1- and T2-weighted axial images of the lumbar spine.
3. T1-weighted contrast enhanced sagittal, axial, and fat-saturated axial images
of the lumbar spine.

RADIOGRAPHIC FINDINGS:
The spinal canal is unremarkable. No evidence of epidural collection seen. No
evidence of abnormal areas of enhancement seen. No evidence of intrathecal enhancement seen. The spinal cord is within normal limits.

L1-L2: unremarkable.

L2-L3: Unremarkable except for a tiny posteriorly positioned left synovial cyst extending along the posterior aspect of the left L2-L3 facet joint.

L3-L4: unremarkable except for some mild to moderate facet hypertrophic changes and ligamentum flavum hypertrophy. No significant central or neural foraminal narrowing is seen.

L4-L5: There is a subtle broad-based disc bulge. Bilateral facet hypertrophic changes seen. There is also some ligamentum flavum hypertrophy. This results in mild central stenosis. The neural foramen and central canal are patent.

L5-s1: There is a right paracentral broad-based disc protrusion. The protruded material extends into the right L5-s1 lateral recess abutting and minimally compressing the right L5-S1 lateral recess. The right s1 nerve root is also minimally but not significantly compressed. The left neural foramen is patent.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

There is degeneration of lumbar spine disc between L 4 - L 5 and L 5 - S 1. The discs between the vertebrae are bulging sidewards and causing pressure on the neural foramina The nerve roots pass through these neural foramina and you might have pain due to nerve root compression at L 5 S 1 level on the right side. Rest of the spine also shows mild degenerative changes.

The nerve pain may be controlled with restricted physical activity and pain relief medication. Please do not do heavy physical activity till you are comfortable.
