Can Decompression Laminectomy Cause Synovial Cyst?
i had decompression laminectomies on L3-4, L4-5 2 months ago. pain in legs has gotten worse. A new MRI reported a new synovial cyst emanating from the left facet joint at L4-L5 compressing the thecal sac. size is 11mm with neural foramina narrowed bilaterally. This cyst was not observed in the pre operative MRI report. One day after the surgery , the internal/external stiches broke apart , and there was signifiant seepage from the incision was then allowed to be closed on its own . Could the surgery trauma have caused the cyst ? What would be the best treatment?

It is possible for surgery in case of the laminectomies to predispose for synovial cyst formation or to expand pre-existent ones. This is true if the bones adjacent to articulations were included in the surgery too. If severe symptoms and compression, the containing of the cyst should be removed.
