Hello, Thanks for the query.
A bp reading of 140/83 mm Hg, in a 17 year old boy is definitely high. Following is the range systolic 100 to 140/ diastolic 60 to 90 mm Hg.
However, in the youger age normal BP will be around 100 to 110/60 to 70 mm Hg. As the age advances it tends to increase. So in a 60plus year person if 140/90 mm Hg is noticed, it is still considered normal but upper level of normal and the person is advised to take precautions so that it does not go above that.. Now a days it is said that BP should ideally be 120 to 130 / 70 to 80 mmHg in adults But in yunger kids it should be as mentioned earlier about 110/60 to 70 mm Hg.
Usually no one is diagnosed to have high BP on single reading. It has to be checked on at least 2 to 3 occasions and then if it still remains high then it is labled as high BP. So please get a repeat reading done.. He should restrict salt intake as well as try maintain near normal weight. Give a trial for three months with this change. If it still remains high then treatment may be needed. Thanks.
