What Do Painful Small Nodes On The Neck Indicate?

In 2002, I had surgery on the lymph node on the right side of my neck. The ENT predicted an hour long surgery & a 1 in scar. It ended up being a 4 hrs surgery with an 8in scar. It was non cancerous. However I now have several small nodes and one that measures 9mm in the same area. The Radiologist does not believe it is cancerous, but it is very painful and affects the movement of my neck & head. What are my chances of facing another surgery? According to the test it is located just posterior to the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Thank you for your answer.

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
Even though you have not told us the indication of the surgery on the lymph node, what i read is, it was a complicated surgery with a complicated scar.Scarring however depends on your tissue healing processes.Healing can at times give rise to a hypertrophic scar or a keloid.
Am sure the node that was operated upon was pretty large.A 9mm node may not need an operation unless we suspect it is a cancerous mass with potential of metastasizing.Since there are many of the nodes, it is not something to take likely as well.I will suggest you get a biopsy of the biggest one for histologic analysis. From the result, management options can be discussed. You may however take a pain/antiinflammatory medication like ibuprofen.
Hope my answer will help you
Best regards
