What Do Moderate Epithelial Cells Mean In A Sputum Culture?

My fathers sputum report is suggesting moderate numerous epithelial cells.. about 3 to 4 weeks he is suffering in cough with sputum... but after some treat he is feeling better now... the doctor advises sputum bacterial c/s test... nd now report is showing no such bacteria but show moderate numerous epithelial cells... what does it means?
