What Do Missed Period And Spotting While On IUD Indicate?

Hi Dr. Rynne, I am an 18 year old female and I have had a mirena iud for about a year and a half a I missed my period this month, i have also had the same symptoms and one day of spotting. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative Im wondering what the chances are that I am experiencing an ectopic pregnancy. thank you, Taylor

Ectopic pregnancy would still result in the production of HCG hormone and would cause a positive test result.

Pregnancy tests can detect pregnancy by day 11 to 14 after conception, so if the test was done before this time then it may need repeating. If it was done after this time then the result is likely accurate.

Mirena can sometimes cause a decrease in periods so it is possible that this is the cause of your symptoms.
