What Do Blisters In Genitals After Taking Amoxicillin Indicate?

My daughter (age 9) was diagnosed with a sinus and an ear infection on Sunday night. Went to urgent care with a 103.5 temp. She has been taking ammoxicillan for 24 hours (3 doses). She is now presenting with leisions on her genitalia. Could it be fever blisters or an allergic reaction? Or something else? Please advise.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Blisters in the genital area after taking amoxicillin could indicate an allergic reaction to the medication. It is important to contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible to inform them of this symptom and seek medical advice. In rare cases, amoxicillin can cause a condition called Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which is a severe allergic reaction that can cause skin lesions and blisters. This condition can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention.

Other possible causes of blisters in the genital area include the herpes simplex virus, which can cause fever blisters or genital herpes, or other viral or bacterial infections. It is important to have your daughter evaluated by a healthcare provider to determine the cause of her symptoms and receive appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
