What Diarrhea And Abdominal Discomfort Along With Weight Loss?
My 12 year old son has been sick for 3 weeks. We ve been to the doctor multiple times. They thought he just had a viral infection that would last 7-10 days but it s been double that. He s never had fever with this sickness. He has lost 8 pounds, had chills a week ago and they just started again today...chills and then hot. He had diarrhea for a period of time and although he has less bowel movements now, he still has mucus in his stool and sometimes just has mucus. He is tired and doesn t have an appetite. He has abdominal discomfort. He s missed 3 weeks of school because he s so tired and needs to be close to a toilet. Every time we think he s getting better he begins to feel worse again.
I think he needs to do a coproculture to see if he is suffering from a bacterial infection. If it still is negative then he may get tested for celiac disease. Celiac disease blood test, TtIgA needs to be done. Also, an intestinal biopsy may be needed. The only treatment, if confirmed, is a gluten-free diet.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka, General & Family Physician
