What Could Severe Pain In Rectum Of A Child Indicate?

My 5.5 year old daughter is complaining of severe pain coming from her rectum area. She has no reddness, no fever and no other symptoms. She did have a cold, and has a little bit of lose stool, but nothing that would seem to me to warrant this response...thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation your daughter is going through.

1. Severe pain coming from rectum area might be due to laceration of rectal mucosa when having loose stool when having cold.

2. It is good that she is not having any fever or other symptoms.

3. I advise to:
- keep her well hydrated: give plenty of water
- encourage to eat soups, fruits and vegetables
- keep good anal hygiene
- observe her bowel movements
- monitor her body temperature
- give paracetamol to ease the pain

If the symptoms will persist, should consult with her pediatrician to run further diagnostic tests:
- colonoscopy
- urine analysis
- fecal analysis
to determine the right diagnosis and specific treatment.

All the best!
