What Could Possibly Cause Constant Ear Pain Without Any Help From Any Medications?

I have had severe ear pain for over a month. I have been prescribed antibiotics, steroids, sinus medication, nasal spray. My doctor has told me the outer ear swelling is gone and the ear appears normal. But the pain hasn t stopped. He is unsure of the reason. What else could be causing it?

Hi and thanks for the query,
Ear pain can be caused by problems inside the ear and sometimes by structures outside the ear.
Since your doctor says that ear is appearing normal then there is a possibility that pain is reffered by structures outside the ear. Common causes are
1) Temporomandibular joint pain. TM joint is the joint between the mandible and the skull. It lies right in front of the ear. Any pain arising from the joint can be misinterpreted as arising from the ear.
2) Tooth aches can get reffered to the ear.
3) Rarely anginas arising from diseased hearts can get reffered to the ear.
All these causes need to be ruled out.
Take care, Regards, Dr Kishori.
