What Could Cause Severe Pain In Ribs And Coughing Up Of Blood?

Hi. I am worried about my nephew. He has severe pain on his right side that goes from his ribs all the way around to his back and when he moves fast he gets sharp shooting pains. He was coughing up blood last night and didn't sleep much. He is 25 years old. What could this be?

Hello,
Coughing up blood with associated chest pain can be caused by many reasons like Pneumonia, Bronchitis and Bronchiectesis, Tuberculosis, Cystic fibrosis, Pulmonary oedema, Goodpasture's syndrome and even cancer of lung.
You should consult a physician for further evaluation through physical examination as well as investigations like total blood count, chest x ray PA view, CT scan chest, sputum culture & sensitivity, blood coagulation test like PT & PTT, Lung function test. Treatment will be based on test result that obtained.
