What Could Black Stuff In The Wound Post Stitch Removal From Shin Indicate?
Hello I had to get stitches on my shin on Memorial Day 10 days later I went back to get them removed and the doctor said all looked well. I did tell her I was going to Canada and she said I would be fine to leave the cut open so it can dry. I also had some black stuff in the wound and I asked her what it was she said it was dead tissue it should fall off in three weeks. It s been three weeks hasn t fallen off and my leg is super swollen. Is this normal?
Any swelling, pain, redness or fever in wound requires urgent medical attention. It could be a sign of possible infection and can lead to spread of infection to blood causing sepsis. I suggest you to visit a general physician or an ER to get the wound examined for possible infection.
If the wound is infected, an X-ray will be taken to check possible spread to bone underneath. If there is any discharge in the affected area, a swab will be collected for microscopy and antibiotic sensitivity. Wound debridement and antibiotics may be required.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ayesha Shareef, General & Family Physician
