What Causes Whooping Cough And Diphtheria Despite Using Nebulizer?

I am going to see a new pulmonary doctor next month and what questions should I ask him? I am 96 years old, had whooping cough followed by diphtheria (?) when I was 6 weeks old. Noticed shortness of breath in 2008 while walking down a hallway. Since then have been on 2 % oxygen at night (Sleep Apnea), and on nebulizer when I think of it during day. I have other non-fatal medical issues. I have poor balance and it is hard for me to straighten up for fear of falling (have had a few plops this year). My feet have calluses which makes it hard to walk easily. Enough info? Lately, going upstairs to my room gets me huffing and puffing for a few minutes. Thank you for your input.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The nebulizer is used for prevention or control of bronchospasm caused by various clinical conditions. The diphtheria and whooping cough are bacterial infections and need specific care with antibiotics, supportive care over and above the nebulizer therapy. Foot callus needs surgical excision under local anesthesia if hampering normal walk (solely due to that). The breathlessness upon going upstairs is most likely related to reduced heart pumping at 96 years.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
