What Causes Welts And Redness On The Hands?
Hello, I was diagnosed yesterday with tendinitis in my left hand, I was given naproxen & keflex & an antihistamine. I woke up today with hives all over both hands, up my left forearm & my right index finger is so swollen I can t bend it. I itch & hurt all over. And this afternoon I started getting hives by my tailbone & on both ankles. I am allergic to penicillin & the Dr knows. I have been taking benadryl bc the antihistamine I was given isn t helping, it s hydroxyzime. The naproxen doesn t help either. On Monday I was in the er for 2 welts on my right palm & redness all over my hand, the Dr thought I was bit by something & told me to ice it & take benadryl. My hands, fingers & ankles are also hot to the touch, I also have what looks like a welt/hive on the bottom of my right foot towards the middle of my foot but closer to my arch. What is going on?

Keflex is in the family of antibiotics called cephalosporins. There are small similarities in structure between cephalosporins and penicillins.
Though they can be used safely in some persons with penicillin allergy, they may cause a problem in others.
It is possible that you fall into the category of persons who experience an allergic reaction.
You may need a course of steroids since the persistent use of the anti histamine is not helping you.
This would require a prescription from your doctor.
You may also want to consider allergy testing so that you can definitely determine what is causing this reaction.
