What Causes Weight Gain During The Post Menopausal Period?

I am 54 years old and post menopausal. I do not eat junk food but can not seem to stop gaining weight. I have heard that is has all to do with hormones, but it is really getting back and starting to effect other things such as my feet. I have heard about the b12 shots, is this a good alternative?

Hello,

Yes, weight gain during menopausal phase is a common finding among women and it is surely connected with the hormones. You will have to watch your diet as you have started already and have to start exercising regularly. Drinking water before meals and eating small portions on intervals of 2-3 hours throughout day may help.

In addition, if you have not done so already, I would advise you to go for blood sugar and thyroid tests. Sudden weight gain is associated with these maladies too.

If your weight does not stop increasing in any way, you can consult a gynecologist and start hormonal therapy to manage the irregularities of the hormones. Vitamin B12 is not found to have effects regarding weight gain but if your blood report indicates you have deficient Vitamin B12, you can go for it.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
