What Causes Warm Feeling In Neck And Eyes After Weaning Off Pain Medicatons?

my husband has had a feeling of warmth from neck up and eyes feels warm and full, as though he has a fever but no fever. His stomach not perfect either. Had back surgery and on pain meds for about 1 month and weened off. Has had these symptoms for 1 months after being off meds. Thanks,

Hi,

One of my areas of expertise is Drugs and Alcohol medicine so I think I have some insight here. The narcotic pain meds, if used for more than 10 days or so does produce some physical dependence and this will grow the longer the meds are used. The duration of the symptoms lasting 1 month out is a good indication of residual dependence on these meds. The withdrawal of the pain meds after being on it for that time causes a lot of chemical changes including an increase in anxiety and release of histamine which often generates the warm sensation.

It is very common to experience the neck and facial warmth sensation at this point after weaning off the meds, so I do have to say that is not uncommon. It does tend to improve over time, but this can take additional weeks and months even in some patients. There is some benefit in using OTC BENADRYL to reduce this sensation and many patients to get benefit from this.
