What Causes Vomiting And Dizziness While Discontinuing Prednisone?

I am trying to withdraw from Prednisone - I ve been on it many years for Crohn s Disease. Last night I was so sick, I truly thought I was dying, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, light-headedness, aching all over. I ve gone from 15 m to 11 ml, going down one ml a week. This last week I first took 11 and a half for a week before going to 11 ml. Is there something I can do to help cope with this? I need to have surgery on my back but the dr. wants me to be down to at least 5 ml before he ll consider the surgery - and I REALLY need to surgery! How do I get through this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
I understand your concern. Gradual tapering off steroids such as prednisone is the only way to decrease their dosage in order to give the adrenal glands time to go back to their normal rate of functioning after being on overcharge mood on steroids and also to avoid the difficult and sometimes dangerous signs and symptoms of withdrawal, such as nausea, vomiting, weakness, fatigue, decreased appetite, dizziness, weight loss etc. However, tapering may not completely prevent withdrawal symptoms, because this primarily depends on the individual and also on the degree of dependence. In any case, tapering may take weeks to months and in cases of high dependency it may take longer, so patience and VERY gradual dose decrease is the key. It is highly recommended that the tapering process be supervised by your doctor and not go through it alone. So please talk to your doctor about this and ask for his cooperation. I am sorry to say that for you to be ready for the surgery, it will take longer than you desire or expect.
Wishing you good health and all the best.
