What Causes Vomiting And Diarrhea After Having Pethidine And Sedative?

My mum who is 80 had an endoscopy yesterday morning. She had sedative and pethadine. Since early this morning she has had vomiting and diarrhea. She had soup and bread at teatime yesterday and a little water this morning. She doesn't have a temperature.

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history of your Grandmother of 80 who had endoscopy with sedative and Pethidine yesterday, had soup and bread at bedtime yesterday and developed diarrhea and vomiting today, temperature is normal.
As per the history you have provided, the cause of diarrhea and vomiting is obviously sort of gastroenteritis that developed due to bread and/or soup.
Pethidine and sedative actually can cause constipation and not diarrhea.
I would advise her the following:
To get properly hydrated and electrolyte balance well maintained.
Get started her on a PPI like Omeprazole, Domperidone, antacid to stop vomiting; once the vomiting stops, she can have oral antibiotics, probiotics, and electrolyte solutions.
but if the vomiting and/or diarrhea does not stop, you need to take her to ER to get a proper clinical evaluation, investigations and treatment.
I find this answer helpful
