What Causes Vertigo After Taking Abilify?

My wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer s 7 years ago. This past week she was given Abilify for 3 days. She was taken to the ER Friday night. The ER doctor ordered that she no be given any more Abilify. She has had poor balance, difficulty staying ? If so, how long before she recovers? Or has she been mentally damaged?

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

Like most medications acting on the central nervous system, Abilify has the potential for causing dizziness and balance issues.

It is a common problem with all drugs of its class (antipsychotics).

The effects are not permanent, they should clear up in a few days, there is no mental damage, no worry.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Olsi Taka, Neurologist
