What Causes Variations In Blood Pressure Readings?

My last three BP readings were..137/83,145/71,144/74. these were taken over the last 3 days at different times of the day. In Nov 2010 in the Doctors office it was 140/75 and on April 7th it was 148/84. I had much lower readings in years past. Do I have a problem? 70 years old, 5' 9", 158. Hello and welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Variation in bp readings is a normal phenomenon. Here your blood pressure is borderline and you being diabetic I would advise you to start on low dose bp medicine like telmisartan 20 mg which will take of bp and have kidney protective effect due to diabetes. Also you should have low salt diet, low calorie and low fat diet. Regular exercises and weight loss will also help. Also get lipid profile tested.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sagar Makode
